WiRē worked with FireWise of Southwest Colorado (now Wildfire Adapted Partnership) to gain insight into the wildfire risk mitigation activities and related characteristics for people with homes in several fire protection districts in in La Plata County, Colorado. Respondents to a household survey in this area tended to rate their overall risk lower than did the wildfire mitigation professional during a risk assessment using the same variables. This finding is actually somewhat common, and is consistent with other hazards research. Specifically, in La Plata County, 68% of respondents thought they had low or moderate wildfire risk, while wildfire mitigation professionals rated 82% of the properties as very high or extreme.
